Change Default Boot Order for Grub in Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 etc. use Grub2 so if your are using any of these version then this trick should work for you.

In Grub2 no longer we can edit grub.conf or menu.list. in these versions "grub" configuration files are located in /etc/default/.

Now first open the terminal and type "sudo gedit /etc/default/grub"and press enter.
then you will get a window like this,

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

GRUB_DEFAULT=0

#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

#
Uncomment to enable BadRAM filtering, modify to suit your needs
# This works with Linux (no patch required) and with any kernel that obtains
# the memory map information from GRUB (GNU Mach, kernel of FreeBSD ...)
#GRUB_BADRAM="0x01234567,0xfefefefe,0x89abcdef,0xefefefef"

#
Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

# The resolution used on graphical terminal

# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

#
Uncomment if you don't want GRUB to pass "root=UUID=xxx" parameter to Linux
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

#
Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_RECOVERY="true"

#
Uncomment to get a beep at grub start
#GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1"
.

Now change the default boot option ,look at the GRUB_DEFAULT  parameter. 0(zero) is the default. if you have windows or any other operating systems they have the position of 5th or 6th in grub list.

If your other operating system is at the 5th position then change the GRUB_DEFAULT parameter to 4 and save it and close the file.Then it will surely loads the other operating system to next time by default.

You can also change the auto boot preset time. look for the GRUB_TIMEOUT and change the value to 15 or 20 seconds.Also dont forget to save the file and then close it.

 Now come the terminal , type "sudo update-grub" .This is very important for change the grub order to make it happen.so dont forget it. Now restart your system and feel the changes.
